2012 Emperor’s Birthday Reception (National Day Reception)

On November 27 Embassy of Japan hosted Emperor’s birthday reception to celebrate 79th birthday of His Majesty the emperor of Japan. Dr. Maitha Shamsi attended the reception as the guest of honor. A chorus of students from the Japanese school in Abu Dhabi presented the national anthems of the UAE and Japan in the original languages.

Signing Agreement in principle on the Tax Convention with the United Arab Emirates

 

 

 

The Government of Japan and the Government of the United Arab Emirates have agreed in principle on a Convention for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.

 

This draft Convention aims to clarify matters relating to the taxation on investment and economic activities in regard to companies carrying on businesses in the partner country, and is expected to promote further mutual investment and economic exchange between the two countries.

 

Moreover, this draft Convention will provide for the effective exchange of information regarding tax matters between the tax authorities in accordance with the international standards, and is expected to contribute to the prevention of international tax evasion and tax avoidance, the importance of which has been recognised at G20 and other international conference.

Signing ceremony for the fuel cell project, which will be worked out by 2014, was held at the UAE University, “UAEU”, with the support of Japan Cooperation Center, Petroleum, “JCCP” by JX Nippon Research Institute, Ltd..

 

At the ceremony, H.E. Ambassador Watanabe delivered a speech before Dr. Abdulla Saad Al-Khanbashi, Vice Chancellor of the UAEU, and approximately 20 distinguished guests from both countries, that he was confident that this technology, which embedded in the fuel cell system, would be used extensively in the UAE in the future and contribute to the sustainability of economic and social development of this country.

 

Hereafter, the project is expected to help pervade fuel cell in the Middle East after demonstrating a network combination with other power source such as solar power.

Inauguration ceremony was held at Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (TAKREER) for the study and application of the possible PV system, and for waste treatment facility in a refinery by Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K., with the support of Japan Cooperation Center, Petroleum, “JCCP*”.

 

At the ceremony, H.E. Ambassador Watanabe delivered a speech before Mr. Jasem Ali Al Sayegh, CEO of TAKREER, and about 20 distinguished guests from both countries, that the PV system was made possible by high-performance thin-film solar cells as a result of 20 years of hard work by the Japanese company. H.E. also said that he was looking forward to seeing that our project bears wonderful fruits and enhances our friendship further.

 

In the future, the PV system is expected to be applied to the oil refinery related facilities after the collaborative testing by 2013.

  • JCCP is a government agency in Japan that was founded in November 1981 to promote technical cooperation and personnel exchanges with the oil-producing countries in the downstream sectors of the oil industry.

Japan welcomes five students from Masdar Institute of Science and Technology this summer 2012

Japan is receiving the first interns from the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) this summer. Five students of the MIST will work as interns in Japanese companies to learn Japanese technologies for sustainable development on the basis of their specialized field of study. The Japanese companies (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, Toray Industries Inc, JGC Corporation and Chiyoda Corporation), in cooperation with the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), are providing the internship programs, in which the students will stay in Japan from the end of May to August. The students will also receive brief lectures about Japanese language, culture and business manners during the first few weeks of their stay in Japan.

 

Welcoming the first internship program organized by the Japanese Government for the MIST students, Embassy of Japan hosted a “send-off” dinner for the students on 16th May at the Ambassador’s residence, with attendance of the Japanese companies. It was a good opportunity for the students, in advance of their internships in Japan, to enjoy Japanese cuisine in a casual atmosphere, and to receive helpful information for their coming life in Japan.

1st Abu Dhabi Japan Economic Council in Tokyo

 The meeting of the Abu Dhabi Japan Economic Council (AJEC) was held February 7th, 2012 in Tokyo. It was the first Council meeting after the Department of Economic Development (DED) and the Japan Cooperation Center for Middle East (JCCME) agreed to establish the AJEC in January, 2011.

 

 Under chairpersons from both sides (Abu Dhabi: H.E. Mr. Alsowaidi, Chairman of the DED, Japan: Mr. Koda, Chairman of the JCCME), challenges and opportunities for deepening bilateral economic relationship in various economic areas were intensively discussed among members of the Council. Significant interest in enhancing bilateral economic relationship from both countries was clearly shown as over 100 people from Abu Dhabi and Japan, including honored guests like H.E. Ambassador Al Nowais and H.E. Mr. Yanagisawa, Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, attended the Council.

 

 Next (2nd) AJEC meeting will take place in Abu Dhabi in November, 2012. It is expected that the discussions of the 2nd AJEC meeting, which will be based on the fruits from the 1st AJEC’s discussion, will function as a framework for promoting further economic relationship between the two countries.

Donations for the victims of the Tohoku District -off the Pacific Ocean Earthquake

 


On 11 March 2011, Japan was hit by the ‘Tohoku District –off the Pacific Ocean Earthquake, the largest earthquake in recorded history of Japan. The earthquake and subsequent tsunamis and fires have caused enormous damage to a wide range of areas.


To support those afflicted by the disaster, the Embassy of Japan in the United Arab Emirates now accepts donations in UAE dirham. Donations can be made in the following ways.

  1. Make donations at the Consular desk of the Embassy by either cash money or cheque (Sunday to Thursday, 8:30-13:00). In case of issuing cheque, addressee should be “Embassy of Japan (Donation)”.
  2. Make donations via direct deposit into the following bank account
    Bank: National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD)
    Branch: Main Branch
    Account: 6202453666
    Name: Embassy of Japan (Donation)


All the donations collected will be sent to The Japanese Red Cross Society. (The remittance charge will be deducted from the donation.)

Embassy may issue a letter of confirmation of your donation. In case donation is made via direct deposit to the said bank account, such letter of confirmation will not be issued due to the lack of identification of donor.


Please be noted that we cannot accept donations in kind at this moment as it is difficult to deliver them to the afflicted areas.

H.H. Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed visited the Embassy to offer condolences

 

On the sad news of the devastating earthquake and Tsunami hitting Japan, H.H. Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates visited the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi on March 13 and met H.E. Tatsuo Watanabe, Ambassador of Japan to the UAE, where he offered condolences to the Japanese people and government. During the visit, Shaikh Abdullah conveyed the heartfelt feeling of sorrow and sadness of Their Highnesses the President and Vice President and Prime Minister and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and the people of the UAE towards the catastrophe. Shaikh Abdullah reiterated UAE’s full support to Japan in facing the calamity and stressed that the relationship with Japan is that of “strong allies”. Shaikh Abdullah concluded his visit by lauding the Japanese arrangements in facing the huge disaster.

Conferment of Decoration by Japanese Government to H.E. Abdulla bin Mohamed Al Masaood

 

On 31 May, the presentation ceremony of Japanese decoration, the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon (Kyokujitsu Chuuju Shou) for His Excellency Abdulla bin Mohamed Al Masaood, Speaker of National Consultative Council, Representative of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates-Japan Society, was held in Hilton Abu Dhabi hotel and the decoration was handed over to His Excellency by H.E. Tatsuo Watanabe, Ambassador of Japan.

 

H.E. Abdulla bin Mohamed Al Masaood is one of 62 foreign nationals who are conferred decorations this time. This is the fifth time for a UAE national to be conferred by the Government of Japan.

 

Since H.E. Abdulla bin Mohamed Al Masaood was appointed by H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, as Representative of Abu Dhabi for UAE-Japan society in May 2000, he has devoted himself to further developing the friendly bilateral relationship between UAE and Japan and promoting the mutual understanding between the two countries.

Higher College of Technology in Abu Dhabi held graduation ceremony for 40 students who received Master Degrees in business innovation.  H.E.  Sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak Al Nahayan, Chancellor of HCT and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, decorated the Embassy of Japan, along with US Embassy, Abu Dhabi National Bank and other organizations, Tamayyuz (distinguished) Prize for their contributions to the college.

Visit to Japan of His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Foreign Minister, visited Japan from 16 to 18 April, 2009 to attend in the Friends of Democratic Pakistan Group Ministerial Meeting and Pakistan Donors Conference in Tokyo. During His stay in Japan, His Highness met Prime Minister Taro Aso at his office on 17 April. In addition, His Highness also met Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone and both sides welcomed the recent developments of bilateral cooperation in the field of energy and education.

The Embassy of Japan in the UAE was awarded “Appreciation Certificate” from Environmental Agency, Abu Dhabi when the ceremony for one year anniversary of its establishment was held on 13 May 2007. This award should be given to a person and an organization which aggressively contribute to environmental activities in Abu Dhabi. For the embassy of Japan in the UAE, it is first time to be awarded. The embassy of the UK, Australia and Argentina were also awarded this year.
The embassy of Japan in the UAE shall continue to make an effort to strengthen bilateral relationship between the UAE and Japan.

The Senior Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan pays tribute to Sheikh Maktoum

On 7 January 2006, H.E. Mr. Katsutoshi Kaneda, the Senior Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs made a visit to the UAE to express condolences for the demise of Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, former Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. During his short visit, H.E. Mr. Kaneda called on H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, new Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, at the Zaabil Palace of Dubai. In the meeting, both sides reviewed the friendly relations between the two countries and wished for further strengthening of the bilateral ties.
