New Japanese Language Courses to be started in the Beginning of February 2011

The UAE-Japan Society is planning to inaugurate new Japanese language courses from the beginning of February to mid-April, 2011. (10 sessions in total, once a week, one hour and half each)
Application and Registration Period
Application form is now available from here; application form and send it to the Embassy after filling and placing a digital photo by e-mail to ayasin@japanembassyauh.com between January 10 to 22.
The deadline for submitting application forms to the Embassy of Japan is January 22, 2011. Please note that in case the number of applicants exceeds the capacity of the said programme, registration may close even before the deadline.
Eligibility
The course is open to the public without gender or nationality restrictions.
(Children under 12 years old are not eligible.)

Japanese Film Festival

The Embassy of Japan in UAE presents four Japanese films on Dec.10 and 11 at National Theater small hall. You are most welcome. Zayed University students visit Ambassador’s Residence
11 November 2010

On November 11, Mrs. Setsuko Watanabe, wife of the Ambassador of Japan, received 8 Zayed University students and their professor, Dr. Michele Bambling, at the residence. The students had the first Japanese art history course established at Zayed University this semester. Mrs. Watanabe and Japanese women demonstrated Japanese tea ceremony and performed a Japanese traditional music using “Koto” instrument. The students also joined the tea ceremony and exchanged views on Japanese art and culture with Mrs. Watanabe during the event.

The World Green Tourism Expo

The 2nd Summer Camp Program in Japan 4-14 July 2010

On June 30, a Send-off Party was held at the Japanese Ambassador’s residence for UAE high school students from model schools at Madinat Zayed in the Western Region who were selected to participate in the 2nd Summer Camp Program 2010 in Japan from July 4 to 14. This program is under the co-sponsorship of Abu Dhabi Education Council, Mitsubishi Corporation and Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. In the party, H.E. Mr. Tatsuo Watanabe, Ambassador of Japan (4th from the right), H.E. Dr. Mugheer Al Khaili, Director General of Abu Dhabi Education Council (5th from the right) and Mr. Shigeaki Yoshikawa, Chief Regional Officer of Mitsubishi Corporation Middle East (6th from the right) made speeches to encourage the students. The representative of the students also made a speech expressing their expectations and readiness to the trip to Japan.

Chopin Bicentennial Mini Concert
21 June 2010

On June 19, a mini piano concert, in the occasion of the bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Chopin, was held at the Ambassador’s Residence. Eight young pianists, winners of the 1st UAE Chopin Competition in Abu Dhabi and the 1st international Gulf Chopin Competition in Kuwait, including 1 Japanese and 5 Emiratis, performed pieces by Chopin, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and others.
The event was attended by many pupils of the Japanese School in Abu Dhabi (JSAD) because five out of the eight pianists were also the students up to Grade 9. Altogether around 100 audiences, including teachers of JSAD and parents of the pupils, attended.
The Pianists thrilled the audience with their talents for around one hour. The young audience enjoyed the music played by the young pianists till the end.

Reception for the Promotion of Completely Cultivated Bluefin Tuna and Other Japanese Products

On May 2nd, H.E. Tatsuo Watanabe Ambassador of Japan, on the occasion of the visit of H.E. Senator Hiroshige Seko and his accompanying delegation from Kinki University Fish Nursery Center (FNC) and Mr. Yoshio Mochizuki, Mayor of Arida-city in Wakayama Prefecture, held a reception at his residence for the promotion and tasting of completely cultivated bluefin tunas and groupers of FNC and citrus products of Arida-city, as well as for discussing ways to promote bilateral cooperation in the field of fish farming.
Approximately a hundred guests including UAE government officials, traders, hotel staffs and Japanese Community members visited the residence, and relished the tastes of variety of dishes served in the venue using the cultivated bluefin tuna such as sushi, sashimi and steak, as well as fresh oranges. Also, a presentation on the technology for bluefin tuna cultivation conducted by Kinki University drew keen interest from the attendees, making the reception a fruitful opportunity to promote the bilateral cooperation in the field of Fishery Industry. Some UAE experts and governmental officials in the UAE were found earnestly exchanging views with the delegation about that technology as well as ways to promote the trade of Japanese agricultural and fishery products.


Koto Performance by Japanese Expatriates

On April 29, two Japanese women living in Abu Dhabi were invited to perform traditional Japanese music on the Japanese Koto instrument, during the Global Day event held at the auditorium of Abu Dhabi University. The two ladies played 3 Japanese spring songs on Koto, “Sea of Spring”, “Sakura” and “Festival Flower” in front of about 500 audience. The audience enjoyed listening to their excellent performance which was greeted with acclaim.

Here we have uploaded the images of the works by two Japanese artists, Mr. Yoshin Ogata and Mr. Masahiro Hasegawa. Those works were exhibited at the Abu Dhabi International Sculpture Symposium at the Officers' Club (Feb.25-April 7) and will be permanently exhibited at the still undetermined location in Abu Dhabi. Final location of exhibition will be announced, once determined, on this web site.

The Fourth International MANGA Awards: Guidelines for Applicants

1. Purpose
To promote MANGA overseas.
2. Conditions of Entry
(1)The MANGA works (24 or more pages) must be produced in countries outside Japan. Both published and unpublished works are eligible except works which have previously received Manga Awards.
(2)The MANGA works must have been produced within the past three years.
(3)As a rule, the works must be submitted in printed form.
(4)Overseas publishing companies are permitted to apply for the Fourth International MANGA Award only if they confirm that their MANGA artists consent to their
works being submitted.
3. How to Apply
(1)Application Period: 31 May 2010 (entries must arrive by 31 May)
(2)Applications should be sent to either i) or ii) below.

4. Return of Works
The submitted works will not be returned to applicants. Therefore, if works have not yet been published, the original should be retained by the artist. We reserve the right to donate submitted works to public organisations.
5. Selection
The Fourth International MANGA Award Evaluation Committee is in charge of the selection procedure.
6. Prize
(1) The Gold Award of the Fourth International MANGA Award will be given to the best MANGA and approximately three works of merit will receive the Silver Award. Winners of the Gold Award and the Siler Awards will receive a cup and a diploma. Winners of the Bronze Awards and the Special Awards will receive a diploma and a gift.
(2) As a supplementary prize, winners (except for those receiving Bronze Awards) will be invited to Japan for around 10 days for the award ceremony.
7. Award Ceremony
The award ceremony will be held in Tokyo in January 2011. (END)

Invitation for Charity Bazaar

The Diplomatic Group for Spouses of Ambassadors in the United Arab Emirates holds a Charity Bazaar on May 2, 2010, 10:00am- 18:00pm at the General Women’s Union (see map). Each country will display for sales of traditional items, handicrafts, and ethnic food. Japan will also display for sales of California Rolls and some Japanese sweets. The entrance ticket (20 Dhs per person) also works as a raffle ticket that you might win a raffle prize such as airline tickets and meal vouchers. Hina-Matsuri (Japanese Girls’ Day)
25 March 2010

On March 25, the Embassy of Japan to the UAE hosted Hina-Matsuri (Japanese Girl’s Day) at the residence. The event was attended by around 70 persons, such as students of Japanese language courses and universities’ Japan clubs in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. The event was started with an orientation on Hina-Matsuri. The orientation was followed by two Japanese spring songs played by the Japanese traditional instrument of “Koto”. All Japanese participants also sung “Ureshii Hina-Matsuri” (Happy Hina-Matsuri) together with the accompaniment of Koto. Participants enjoyed the experience of cerebrating Hina-Matsuri in a model Japanese family atmosphere and exchanged views on Japanese culture with Mrs. Watanabe during the event.

Congratulation Ceremony for First Emirati Women Reaching Kilimanjaro Summit

On March 7, Dr. Nawal Khalifa Al Hosany, Associate Manger of Sustainability at Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), and Ms. Ruba Yousef Al Hassan, Social Development Advisor at the General Secretariat of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council was invited to the Ambassador's residence for a congratulation ceremony on their accomplishment, as the First Emirati Women, of the adventure to reach the summit of the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, on February 7, 2010.
Dr. Nawal and her closest friend Ms. Ruba enthusiastically told exiting episodes of their adventure, its impact on the way they see life and also their image towards Japan and its culture. (to read more in PDF file, click here)

"The Ship for World Youth" anchored at Dubai

The Ship for World Youth (Fuji-Maru), chartered by the Cabinet Office of Japan, anchored at Port Rashid, Dubai, from Feb.8-11. A welcome reception was held on board at 12:30 p.m, Feb.8, honored by the presence of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. Later on that day, another reception was jointly hosted by the Cabinet Office and the Embassy.
Twelve youths from each of the twelve participating countries, in addition to an equivalent number of youths from Japan, on board of Fuji-Maru, engaged in cultural exchange through various activities. The Ship departed Yokohama on Jan.22, sailed to Dubai via Singapore, will anchor again at Chennai, India and will return to Tokyo on Mar.5.
Sending its youths to the project every two years, UAE is an important partner of the program. It is the first time in 11 years, since 1999, for the ship to anchor at Dubai.
