· Japan recognized the UAE as an independent state in December 1971. · Japan opened its embassy in the UAE in April 1974, while the UAE opened its embassy in Japan in December 1973. · Japan opened its consulate general in Dubai in January 1995. · The late President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan visited Japan as a state guest in May 1990. · H.I.H. Crown Prince and H.I.H. Crown Princess of Japan visited the UAE in January 1995. · Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited Japan as a guest of Ministry of Foreign Affairs in April 2004. · Prime Minister Mr. Shinzo Abe officially visited the UAE and convened a meeting with President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan in April 2007. · Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited Japan on an official working visit in December 2007. · President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum sent His Imperial Majesty a condolence telegram for the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. Minister of Foreign Affairs H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other senior officials signed the condolence book at the Embassy of Japan in the UAE. · Prime Minister Mr. Shinzo Abe visited the UAE in May 2013. He convened meetings with Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, when Japan and the UAE jointly announced the statement on the strengthening of the comprehensive partnership between Japan and the UAE towards stability and prosperity. · Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited Japan as an official guest in February 2014 to follow up the Joint Statement issued during the Prime Minister's visit to the UAE in May 2013. · Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited Japan upon invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in April 2017. His Highness met H.I.H.
