A Japanese famous natural textile artist holds cultural events in the UAE

 

Izukura

On November 11-15, Mr. Akihiko Izukura, a famous Japanese natural textile artist who is active in the U.S. and Europe, visited the UAE for the first time. Under the patronage of Embassy of Japan, he mounted exhibitions in both Abu Dhabi Art Hub and Sharja University where he presented his own philosophy in dying clothes using traditional Japanese nature-friendly method.

On 26 and 27 June, Mr. Gouta Matsumura, Representative Director of the Ishinomaki NPO center, held two lectures respectively at the University of Sharjah and at the General Secretariat of the Executive Council – Abu Dhabi. Mr. Matsumura talked about his city, Ishinomaki; which was severely hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and presented his center's unique experience in developing revival activities in and around Ishinomaki.

Japanese Film Screening on 17 November

The Embassy of Japan will hold a Japanese Film Screening on Saturday 17 November, 2012. Animation film called “5 Centimeters per Second” will be screened in Japanese language with Arabic subtitle. The film was directed by a world-renowned animation creator Makoto Shinkai.

The event is open for public. Admission free.

Workshop on Japanese Traditional Confections

On September 3rd, 2012, the Embassy held a workshop on Wagashi, traditional Japanese confectionery, at the Ambassador’s residence in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with TORAYA.

 

This event was organized to introduce diversity of Japanese culture to Emirati people. UAE officials in the education sector and members of the General Women’s Union participated in the workshop.

 

Following the lecture about history and ingredients of Japanese confections and the demonstration of preparation, participants tried to prepare the sweets, learned about Japanese tea ceremony and tasted Wagashi and tea.


They enjoyed learning the concept of Wagashi that lies not only in the taste but also in the beautiful presentation.

Introducing Japan in the English Summer Challenge of UAE University

On 19th July, Mr. Setsuo Ohmori, DCM of the Embassy of Japan, made a presentation on Japan in the English Summer Challenge of UAE University, which is sponsored by ADEC with the aim of improving local high school students’ skills of English.

 

The presentations were made for both male and female students separately. After showing a DVD on Japan, Mr. Ohmori introduced basic information on Japan and the bilateral relations between UAE and Japan by giving quiz.

 

The pictures of Japan, shown in the DVD, attracted students’ attention. In addition, the quiz stimulated their intellectual curiosity and increased their interaction with the topics during the presentation.

 

At question and answer session, students were keen to understand various aspects in details by raising questions on several topics as Japanese culture, latest technologies, trade and information on studying in Japan.

 

The Embassy of Japan highly evaluates this opportunity for promoting and introducing Japanese culture to the UAE young generation and looking forward to cooperate with other educational institutions as well.

Japanese Students from the Fujimigaoka High School had exchanges with the UAE students and a senior official from Masdar

March 28th and 29th, Japanese students from the Fujimigaoka High School visited the UAE as their short-term study abroad program, and had an opportunity for making warm relationship with UAE students.

 

On March 28th, the Japanese students visited the UAE University (UAEU) to develop friendship with members of the “Sakura Club (Japan Club)” of the UAEU. After respective presentations about respective schools, the “Sakura Club” guided the campus and offered an opportunity for Japanese students to try on the UAE’s traditional costume, Abaya. As the UAEU students voluntarily provided their explanation about the museum which Japanese student visited after the exchange program at the UAEU campus.

 

The following day, the students of Fujimogaoka met with the members of Japan Club of the Zayed University. The members of Japan Club explained the development plan of Saadiyat Island for Japanese students at the Manarat Museum in the Island.  Students exchanged gifts and their contact information for further communications.

 

A few months later, on May 31st, students from the Fujimigaoka received a senior official from Masdar, Dr. Nawal Al Hosani, Director-Sustainability. Dr. Hosani visited Japan to promote the “Zayed Future Energy Prize,” and taking this opportunity, she visited Fujimigaoka to learn about the Fujimigaoka’s education for environment. Dr. Hosani also received their hearty welcome from the students who visited the UAE last March.

 

Furthermore, on July 13th, the members of “Sakura Club” from the UAEU visited Fujimigaoka Campus in Tokyo.  Friendly relationship between students from the UAE and Japan was renewed through their presentations about Japanese culture, such as Japanese calligraphy, and Kendo performance.

 

Further development of wider two-way relationship is expected between the two countries through this kind of friendly interaction between the students from the UAE and Japan.

Japan won the AFC Futsal Championship title
6 June 2012

 

On June 1st, Japanese Futsal National Team won the final by 6-1 at Al-Wasl Stadium, in Dubai, and was crowned the new champion of Asian Futsal.

 

The game seesawed at the beginning, but at 15th minute of the first half Japanese team scored the go-ahead goal. In the 10th minute of the second half, a Japanese player got a red card. As a result, the team was forced to play in an extremely difficult situation. However, they got over the disadvantage and scored 6 goals.

 

Japanese team has already won the ticket to the World Cup to be held in Thailand this November. Congratulations to all the players, the coach and all the supporting fans!

On 30 May, Abu Dhabi University hosted an annual cultural festival “Global Day” at khalifa city campus of the university. Following an opening ceremony attended by a number of ambassadors and diplomats, traditional dances and songs were performed by students from various countries. Members of Japan Club of the university performed Kimono (Japanese traditional wear) show.
Japan Club of Abu Dhabi University has 15 member students and is actively engaged in learning and promoting Japanese culture in Abu Dhabi.

The First Japanese Speech Contest in the UAE

On May 24th, the First Japanese Speech Contest in the UAE was held successfully at the Japanese Ambassador’s residence.

 

18 beginner level speakers and 7 intermediate and advance level speakers competed to win the awards in each level. Following speeches, Mr. Ahmad Bukhash, chief architect & founder of Archidentity who majored in architecture and design in Kyoto Institute of Technology and a alumnus of Japanese Government scholarship program, made a presentation about his experience in Japan, concluded question and answer session.

 

To celebrate the occasion, a reception was held and a Japanese buffet including Sushi-roll and tempura was served there. The contest and the reception was a precious chance for Japanese language educators and learners to exchange their experience and opinions.

On May 3rd, the opening ceremony of the new Japanese School premise and the launch of Japanese Culture Center was held successfully held at its new school premises in which H.E. Tatsuo Watanabe, Ambassador of Japan to the UAE, H.E. Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Education Council and Mrs. Hoda Kanoo, Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation attended.

 

After the greetings from Mr. Ubukata, Ambassador Watanabe and Dr. Al Khaili made their remarks in which they hope the relocation of Japanese School and opening of Japanese Culture Center would be a milestone for developing the educational and cultural ties between UAE and Japan. Following the remarks the students and teachers sang three Japanese songs in chorus.

 

After the opening ceremony, Mr. Onodera, the principle of the Japanese School in Abu Dhabi, guided the guests on tour in the new premise. During the tour, “soran-busi”a Japanese traditional dance was presented by kindergarten pupils and a Japanese tea ceremony was demonstrated for them.

On 8 April, Mr. Setsuo Ohmori, Chargès d’affairs, of the Embassy of Japan attended a ceremony for the donation of 100 titles of Japanese books which were donated by Nippon Foundation to Zayed University Dubai Campus this year.

AT the library of Zayed University, Mr. Ohmori was received by Dr. Lauren R. Willson, Provost of Zayed University. Present in the reception were the Japanese Club students and their Japanese teacher.

Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2012

The annual event “Abu Dhabi International Book Fair” was held at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from March 28th - April 2nd. During this period, more than 200,000 visitors toured the booths and stands of the Exhibition where more than 500,000 titles were displayed.

In the Japanese booth, around 300 titles were displayed with a variety of subjects and topics such as Manga, Anime, Origami (Paper Folding), Japanese Foods, Japanese language, mentality and history. Mr. Hideki Yamada, Director of the First Editorial Department of the University of Tokyo Press, answered many questions posed by visitors and publishers wishing to further their understandings of Japanese culture.

A small origami class, held in front of the booth, attracted a large number of people. The class promoted selling out more origami books from Kinokuniya booth, located in the backside of the Japanese booth.

The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair has now become a good opportunity to introduce the attraction of Japanese culture towards the people of UAE.

Reception to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the earthquake

On March 22, the Embassy of Japan in the UAE held a reception to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake at the Ambassador’s residence in Abu Dhabi. More than 130 guests attended the reception. In the opening remarks, Ambassador Watanabe renewed his condolences to all victims of the unprecedented disaster, assuring that he firmly believed in recovery and revival of Japan thanks to various assistances from the people of the UAE.

 

A calligraphic demonstration was made by Mr. Bruno Riva, a Swiss calligrapher, after the speech. He wrote several pieces in Japanese letters under the theme of the reconstruction of Japan. The guests enjoyed the exhibition on the walls of the venue where numerous messages and thoughtful gifts the Embassy had received from Emiratis and other nationals residing in the UAE were displayed.

Small World 2012

On March 16th, an annual charity event “Small World 2012” was held at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
19 countries, including Japan, participated in the event. Booths were decorated in their unique designs and their national foods were served. On the stage, original dance and songs were performed.
Japanese booth served sushi-roll and teriyaki chicken which attracted many visitors.
This event was a special occasion for sharing friendship with other nations and demonstrating Japanese culture to the visitors.
Last year, Small World donated 750,000Dh to the Japanese Red Cross to support the earthquake and tsunami victims. Our embassy extends the cordial thanks to the Small World.

From March 7 to 10, 14 members of “Japan Future Leaders School” visited Abu Dhabi. They participated in a cultural exchange program with members of the Nippon Club at Khalifa University. While having a traditional Emirati breakfast prepared by the Club members, students from the two countries introduced traditional commodities to each other in their own culture. During a presentation made by the Japanese members, they shared basic knowledge about Japanese culture, politics and economy with the Emirati students. They also made discussions on interesting topics such as the Imperial System, job hunting in Japan and so on.

On 26 and 29 February, Taiko (Japanese drum) concerts by Mr. Eitetsu Hayashi and members of “EITETSU FU-UN no KAI” were held in Abu Dhabi and Dubai respectively under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister of the UAE, to mark the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of UAE-Japan Diplomatic Relations. H.H. Sheikh Abdullah attended the concert held at Abu Dhabi National Theatre. More than 1,500 audiences thronged to see the performance in the two cities were fascinated with their resounding beats.

 

Concurrently with the concert, a Japanese photo and food exhibition was arranged and held by the Japanese Community in Abu Dhabi. The hall was crowded with a large number of visitors who toured the exhibition and enjoyed the taste of sushi.

Release of Newly-Translated Japanese Books by Kalima

On December 6, 2011, and in the presence of Ambassador Watanabe and Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Director of Kalima, the foreign books translation project of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), held a ceremony at Kinokuniya Book World in Dubai to announce the release of newly-translated series of Japanese literature into Arabic.
The newly released seven books are;  "All She Was Worth"by Miyuki Miyabe, "Floating Clouds"by Fumiko Hayashi, "Shame in the Blood" by Tetsuo Miura, "Tokyo Tango" by Rika Yokomori, "Botchan (Master Darling)" by Soseki Natsume, "Woman on the Other Shore" by Mitsuyo Kakuta and "School of Freedom" by Bunroku Shishi.  With this, the total number of the translated and published books by Kalima from Japanese literature and other fields reaches 14.
Timing of the release was chosen to coincide with the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of the UAE Federation and the 40th anniversary of Japan- UAE bilateral diplomatic relationship.

Reception in Celebration of the 78th Birthday of His Majesty, the Emperor of Japan

On November 30, the Embassy of Japan in the UAE held a reception in celebration of the 78th Birthday of His Majesty, the Emperor of Japan, at the Hilton Abu Dhabi Hotel. H.E. Jumaa Mubarak Al Junaibi, Undersecretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the UAE along with 600 guests attended the reception.

The reception opened with the National Anthems of the UAE and Japan sung by the students of the Abu Dhabi Japanese School.

In his speech, Ambassador Tatsuo Watanabe expressed his gratitude to H.H. Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other high officials for their kind support to make the move of the school to the new premises a reality. By referring to a Japan cultural center, newly established within the Japanese school, he emphasized the excellent and diversified bilateral relationship between the UAE and Japan and hoped the expanding cultural exchange will deepen a mutual understanding and consolidate a friendship between the two countries further.

World Robot Olympiad (WRO)2011 Abu Dhabi

Books Donation to the Zayed University

On October 18, at the Library of the Zayed University’s new campus in Khalifa A city, Ambassador Watanabe and Dr. Sulaiman Al Jassim, the Vice President of the University, attended a ceremony for the donation of the books from Japan.  The donated books included 313 titlesoffered by the Japan Foundation (160 in English, 146 in Japanese and 7 in Arabic), 99 titles offered by the Nippon Foundation (all in English).
These books participated in the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair in March 2011.
Encouraged by the success in the first ever participation, the Embassy plans to take part again in Abu Dhabi International Book Fair to be held between March 28 to April 2, 2012.

Big gratitude for the donation-- UAE university students won introduction on Japanese culture

New Japanese Language Courses to be started in September 2011

The UAE-Japan Society is planning to resume its Japanese language Courses program starting new bundle of courses for beginners and other levels in Abu Dhabi as early as mid-September, 2011. (8-9 sessions in total, once a week and one hour and half each)

Application and Registration

Only new or beginners need to apply. Application forms are now available here. Please download the application form, fill it in, place a digital photo and finally email it to the Embassy to: ayasin@japanembassyauh.ae in the period from 21 August to 6 September 2011.
The deadline to receive application forms in the Embassy of Japan is 6 September, 2011.

 

If you are a student of the past JLC courses, please write your name and the last course which you attended then send it to the above-mentioned e-mail address.

Please note that in case the number of applicants exceeds the capacity of the said programme, registration may close even before the deadline.

Eligibility

The course is open to the public without gender or nationality restrictions(Children under 12 years old are not eligible.).

Guidelines for Application

 

1. Purpose

To promote MANGA overseas.

 

2. Conditions of Entry

 

(1) The MANGA works (24 or more pages) must be produced in countries outside Japan. Both published and unpublished works are eligible except works which received the past MANGA Awards.

(2) The MANGA works should be produced within three years.

(3) The works must be submitted in printed form as a rule.

(4) Overseas publishing companies are permitted to apply for the Fifth International MANGA Award only if they confirm that their MANGA artists consent to their works being submitted.

 

3. How to Apply

 

(1)  Application Period; 21 July 2011 – 31 August 2011 (entries must arrive by 31 August)

(2)  Applications should be sent to either i) or ii) below.

  The submitted works will not be returned to applicants.  Therefore, if works have not yet been published, the original should be retained by the artist. We might donate submitted works to public organisations, otherwise properly dispose of them.

 

5. Selection

 

  The Fifth International MANGA Award Evaluation Committee is in charge of the selection procedure.

 

6. Prize

 

 (1) The Gold Award of the Fifth International MANGA Award will be given to the best MANGA and approximately three works of merit will receive the Silver Award.
(2)   Winners will be invited to Japan for around 10 days as supplementary prize for the award ceremony (Gold and Silver Award winners only).

 

7. Award Ceremony

 

  The award ceremony will be held in Tokyo in March 2012.

"Chura", the Okinawa Musical Group, performs in the UAE

“Chura”, the Okinawa Musical Group with the wide experience of performances around the world, will come to the UAE and perform in accordance with the following schedule.  Please come and see with your friends and family.  The show is free of charge.  Please note that the number of seats is limited.
Members of the Japan Club in the University will set up the donation box to raise funds necessary for ongoing rescue and reconstruction works in the earthquake and tsunami-hit areas of Japan.

New Japanese Language Courses to be started in the End of April 2011

The UAE-Japan Society is planning to resume its Japanese language Courses program starting new bundle of courses for beginners and other levels in Abu Dhabi from the end of April to mid-June, 2011. (7 sessions in total, once a week and one hour and half each)

Application and Registration

Only new or beginners need to apply. Application forms are now available here. Please download the application form, fill it in, place a digital photo and finally email it to the Embassy to: ayasin@japanembassyauh.com in the period from 21 to 27 April 2011.
The deadline to receive application forms in the Embassy of Japan is 27 April, 2011.

If you are a complete beginner, only one course is available at 16:30 on every Tuesday.

Please note that in case the number of applicants exceeds the capacity of the said programme, registration may close even before the deadline.

Eligibility

The course is open to the public without gender or nationality restrictions(Children under 12 years old are not eligible.).

Place

Courses will be conducted at:

Abu Dhabi Oil Co., Ltd.(Japan), ADOC (1st floor)

Khalidiah, opposite to Prestige Cars building

Fees

An amount of Dh 300 will be charged as fees per person per course.

Note: In case the number of the registered students does not reach to minimum of eight students per class, class may be cancelled or students may cover the minimum cost of eight.

Date & Time

Classes will be conducted on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, at 16:30 and 18:00.

The Japan Booth in Abu Dhabi International Book Fair

The Embassy of Japan in the UAE currently participates, for the first time, in the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair at ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center) from 15-20 March.  Please visit our booth No. 11c45 (in front of a cafeteria and next to Dubai Kinokuniya Bookshop’s booth).  The Book Fair is open between 9:00 and 22:00 everyday (except for Friday March 18, when it opens at 16:00).

Asian Ladies’ Association of Abu Dhabi presents Asian Food Fair on March 5, 2011, 11:00a.m – 15:00p.m (until sold out) at Indonesian Embassy . (Sultan Bin Zayed St., 《32nd》,Villa No.474 《between 16th and 19th St.》 map is here)   Fourteen Asian countries, including Japan, participate in the event.  Japanese fried chicken (Kara-age) and California Rolls will be served. Iai-Jutsu Demonstration

On 16 February 2011, at Al-Wahda Mall, Mr. Masato Matuura, an Iai-Jutsu master who based in Paris, along with Mr. Bruno Marin performed Iai-Jutsu techniques. During the workshop, two UAE national students of Aikido were trained on the stage on the Iai-Jutsu techniques in front of significant number of audience. Many UAE national fans of Japanese martial arts, such as Judo, Kendo and Aikido, were among the audience, in addition to those shoppers who were attracted by the beat of Japanese drum.

 

This event was jointly sponsored by the Embassy of Japan and the UAE Judo Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling Federation in cooperation with Al-Wahda Mall, the Japan Foundation and Mr. Diyab Al-Aseeri, a UAE Aikido instructor.
